If you want to place gems into your gear sockets in New World, you will first need to have an item with a gear socket and a gem. You can get items that have gear sockets by getting either as loot or crafting them.

Crafting weapons and armor can also have increased chances of getting gear sockets, provided you add a little azoth to them. The more azoth you add, the higher the chance these items will have to gain a gem slot when they are crafted.

Once you have a gem slot and an item with it, you will need to get a gem to place in it. You can get gems also by crafting in town using the stonecutter. Gems will require various resources, but most commonly motes that you can find all over the game world.

Find these resources and take them back to the stone cutter to make them into gems. These gems can be placed right into your weapon or armor’s free slot to give it various bonuses.

You can view the bonuses gems give by viewing them under the stonecutter and hovering over them, as shown below. Use this method to know what gems you want to craft and what resources they require.
