Bayonetta series is among the most popular hack-and-slash games ever made. One of the major reasons why this series is popular is because of its main character, Bayonetta herself. Her charm and unique sense of humor was the freshness everyone needed in a hack-and-slash video game. Bayonetta 3 is the newest entry of the series, and here is how to play as Viola in the game.

How to Play as Viola in Bayonetta 3

In the latest games of the Bayonetta series, we saw many new gameplay and artistic changes. These changes saved the series from falling into the pit of repetitive gameplay. One of the new things added to the game was the new playable characters.

One of the playable characters in Bayonetta 3 is an Umbran Witch called Viola. For better or worst, the main character of the game is still Bayonetta, and for the majority of the time, you will play her character.

When it comes to Viola, players don’t have the option to choose to play as her. They can only get a taste of her fighting when the game decides. We can say that Viola is a half-playable character since we can’t choose when selecting her.

The first-time player will get a chance to play as Viola in Bayonetta 3 in Chapter 5. At the start of the chapter, you will see a list of commands that you can use to control Viola’s movements. Here is the list of her moveset:

  • X button (Mash) – Perform a combo of quick slashes
  • X button (Hold) – Unleash a special strike
  • A button – Blade techniques
  • Y button – Throw four darts
  • ZL button – Hold to throw Viola’s katana to summon Cheshire, who fights on his own while Viola switches to a barehanded style
  • R button (Hold) – Block attacks with the katana. Has diminishing returns
  • R button (Press) – Just as an enemy strikes, press the button to parry it and activate Witch Time

The combat style of Viola is totally different from Bayonetta, even though both of them are witches. Viola usually relies on her katana, which is a cool challenge and innovative way to keep the gameplay fresh.

Bayonetta 3 is now available exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
