Nioh 2 is all about chopping up monsters, and the only thing better than chopping up monsters alone is doing it with a friend. Jolly cooperation is a central part of games like Nioh 2, and the various games that influenced it, so thankfully you can play through the game with a friend, or friends if you wish. While it is fun to play with a friend, there are also a few mechanics that you will need to be aware of.
To play with a friend, you will need to open up the world map and select your Starting Point. Select the Torii Gate and you will be able to create a custom lobby by choosing Expedition. Select “Custom Match”, then “Create Room” to set up your lobby.
You can then decide if you want the two available slots to be Private, or Open. Private means friends/people with a password only, while Open means a random player can join. Set a password, and give it to your friends so they can search for it. To search, they will need to repeat the steps of going to Starting Point, the Torii Gate, Expeditions, and they will need to set “Special Matching Conditions” to Friends.
When you are playing with friends, more enemies will spawn, so you will need to be very careful not to get overwhelmed if you wander off alone. Each player also has their own instanced loot, it is not a shared loot system so you don’t need to fight about who gets which drops.
You will also need to be very careful about dying. You will have what is called a “Co-op Gauge”, and dying will cause it to go down when the gauge is empty you will no longer be able to be revived. So, if you have a friend that is prone to falling off things, be sure to shepherd them around the level carefully.
