Thanks to the ability to transmog one’s armor in God of War Ragnarok, players are able to adorn Kratos in whatever stylish fit they please while exploring the Nine Realms. For those unfamiliar with this feature, transmogrification, or transmog for short, is a mechanic typically featured in MMOs that allows users to wear whatever armor they want without changing their stats. Cosmetic apparel goes on top of players’ actual armor, granting them a different look while retaining their current armor’s passives, stats, or abilities. Likewise, Kratos can wear the Fallen Stars Armor Set in God of War Ragnarok but transmog his appearance to look like he is wearing the Undying Pyres Set. 

Unlocking Armor Transmog in God of War Ragnarok

However, the ability to transmog Kratos’s armor in God of War Ragnarok is not available from the get-go. This mechanic is only unlocked after players upgrade their gear to max level, Level 9. For instance, if players want to wear the Dragon Scaled Armor Set over their Armor of Enlightenment, all pieces of the Dragon Scaled must be Level 9.

According to YouTuber Philminator, the max level requirement for armor transmog also applies to weaponry in God of War Ragnarok. This means that players can change the appearance of Kratos’s blades and axe after the item has reached Level 9. Once a piece of equipment has attained this level for the first time, a pop-up window should appear indicating that the transmog function has been unlocked. 

To transmog a piece of armor or a weapon, players must press the Square button on PlayStation to edit the equipment’s appearance. Next, they must select from the list of transmog-ready items and hold the Square button again to apply the transmog to their currently equipped gear. As noted above, only Level 9 gear pieces will appear in the list. Additionally, the armor that players are wearing does not need to be Level 9 to perform transmogrification. Only the equipment that players wish to wear without a change in stats needs to be Level 9. For example, if players want to wear the Plackart of Fallen Stars over their Cuirass of Raven Tears, only the Plackart needs to be Level 9 for transmogrification.
