In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, several things determine the overall strength of your character. There is a skill tree that improves stats and unlocks attack moves, and increases the overall power level. Then there are gear upgrades that help in improving your gear. Abilities are another important aspect of the game that can help you immensely in combat.
Abilities are basically special moves that can be used at the cost of Adrenaline that you gain while fighting. There are many abilities in the game, but unlocking them is quite tricky. As you explore the world, you might come across these golden icons on the compass that represent a book. These are known as Book of Knowledge.
To unlock new abilities, you need to get access to these Books of Knowledge. You can use synchronization points to mark all the treasure on your map and keep exploring them one by one to find the Books of Knowledge in the area. Once you have got near to one, you need to find a way to get to the Book of Knowledge.
Most of the time, it isn’t straightforward. You will have to either search for a key with clues for the door to the Book of Knowledge or find the entrance itself. For instance, in one of the missions, you need to get the key from a sty nearby. Using your Raven in these situations is quite helpful since it can mark the key on the screen.
Once you have unlocked abilities, you can equip them by going to the ability screen in the menu. Just select the ability you want to equip and press the key you want to bind it to. You can bind up to 4 ranged and 4 melee abilities on the four keys, 1,2,3 and 4 (RT/R2 + Square/X, Triangle/Y, Circle/B and Cross/A on the controller). While melee abilities can be used directly by pressing the key, ranged abilities can be used by pressing the right mouse button (LT/L2 on the controller) along with the key.
