When the initial trailer for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe dropped a few months ago, Blue Toad fans were heartbroken to see their favorite Mario character drop out of the game in favor of Toadette.
In order to bring new content to the game and potentially appeal to more female players, Toadette was added to the game over Blue Toad with a brand-new power up, allowing her to change into Peach.
Yellow Toad remained playable for all the Toad lovers still out there, and as far as people knew, there was no way to unlock the fancy Blue Toad anywhere in the game—until now.
That’s right, folks—Blue Toad is in fact still in the game and very much playable. Nintendo, however, doesn’t really spell this out to you, so allow us to help you on your quest to become the Blue Toad in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
All you need to do to get Blue Toad is hover over Yellow Toad in the character select menu and hold the ZL or L button. You then need to press A to select the character while holding the button. If you ever want to be Yellow Toad again, you just need to repeat the same setup.
And that’s it—Blue Toad lives on.
